Purchasing Workshops

Purchasing workshops are designed to build a solid foundation in government procurement knowledge. The workshops are interactive and not only provide classroom theory, but practical application through exercises, case studies, role plays, discussions and quizzes. Class size is limited to facilitate interaction and discussion.
Essentials of Contract Management
The purpose of this workshop is to provide essential information to contract personnel to establish a successful contract management program. As it is critical that government properly manage contracts, the workshop is designed to acquaint students with all aspects of the contracting process, including best practices and processes. The workshop contains lecture and discussion; as well as small group exercises and case studies.

Ethics in Contracting
The purpose of this workshop is to help those involved with the public purchasing process to understand the importance of ethical behavior in government contracting. It is designed to help procurement professionals recognize ethical dilemmas and give them the tools necessary to make sound, ethical decisions. Also includes discussion of the various types of procurement fraud and how to recognize fraud indicators. The workshop contains lecture and discussion; as well as small group exercises and case studies.

The purpose of this workshop is to help public purchasing professionals learn basic negotiation skills. Often government purchasers fail to utilize this important tool in getting the best value for their agency because they do not have the necessary negotiation skills. The workshop is designed to teach important negotiating skills to leverage the purchaserís position with suppliers.

Procurement Management Academy
This workshop is designed for procurement professionals who are currently in a management role or aspire to be in a management role. The workshop covers a variety of procurement management topics and other general management topics. Many of the concepts taught in this workshop follow the "Achievement of Excellence in Procurement" guidelines through the National Procurement Institute. This is a national program that benchmarks organizational excellence in procurement. The workshop contains lecture and discussion - as well as small group exercises, case studies and discussion circles.

Purchasing 101 for Everyone
This workshop will explain and facilitate understanding of the public purchasing process. It focuses on small dollar (informal) purchase procedures, writing competitive specifications, using minority businesses and procurement card best practices. Workshop attendance earns a certificate for continuing education hours for purchasing and contracting certifications such as the State of Texas (CPA-TPASS), the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP), the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) and the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO).
